Rise in entrepreneurs with disabilities

Rise in entrepreneurs with disabilities

Almost half a million disabled people have started their own business in the past year, 32,000 more than in the previous 12 months, according to new figures.

The Government said the total was a record, adding that 150 disabled people were moving into jobs or training every day.

Mark Harper, Minister for Disabled People, said: "Disabled people are becoming more confident in the recovering economy and starting their own business."

The figures were released as the winner of a £50,000 award for Britain's most entrepreneurial disabled person was announced as Ben Wolfenden, who has cystic fibrosis.

Easyjet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, said of his award: "Already over 100,000 disabled entrepreneurs employ an equivalent number of people in their business start-ups.

"This highlights the extraordinary strength of the flair and talent amongst the disabled people of this country.

"Lots of these men and women have overcome incredible obstacles - over and above those usually faced by most starting a new business."
