In June 2011 I left my city job on maternity leave to have my first child. Whether to return to work after maternity was a difficult decision. The flexibility I required meant that my role would change and I would no longer be client facing, so I decided not to go back and be a ‘full time mum’ instead.
While I would have liked to carry on working, I also wanted to spend time with my daughter and didn’t want to miss out on any of her milestones. A few years later I had my second child and the thought of going back to work was looking less likely.
Over the next few years, I saw other women in my position progressing in their career, as well as be there for their children, and I wondered if I had made the right choice, but by this time surely it was too late. Would I even know how to do my job after all these years?
Through the recent pandemic, I realised that flexible working was not a myth but a reality, and a successful one. My fears about returning to work started to fade. I have been extremely lucky to have found a role as a returner and am proud to say that after a career break of over 10 years I have returned to work in the same capacity as I left.
Aon’s policy on agile working has allowed me to return to work while balancing my home life. My new team in talent acquisition have been incredibly welcoming and supportive - I was overwhelmed with offers to help in each of my introductory meetings which really helped ease me back into work life. Now, 2 months in, it really feels as if I never left!
