On the 11th April 2017, the Aspiring Solicitors Ability Event took place at the Reed Smith offices in London. This is the second “Ability” event that Aspiring Solicitors have hosted, with the aim of increasing awareness and understanding of disabilities within the legal profession.

The event consisted of two panel sessions and networking for all attendees. The panel sessions included one that was aimed at future trainees with various disabilities and was delivered by current trainees with disabilities and their supervisors, this session was on “reasonable adjustments”. The other session was focused on mental health.

It is clear to see that there is a “dire need for more disability diversity within the legal sector” and this event encourages disabled individuals to openly discuss their experiences and how they have overcome the challenges that they have faced, in order to pursue a career within the legal sector. It is clear to see that more needs to be done in order to encourage and support disabled individuals into the legal profession through inclusive recruitment practices, reasonable adjustments and employee initiatives.

Reed Smith is proud to have supported the Aspiring Solicitors Ability Event for the second year running, highlighting their commitment to increasing diversity within the legal profession. Reed Smith has a disability initiative called the Disability Task Force, which was inspired by the 2012 Paralympics as they want to ensure that their recruitment efforts are reaching those with disabilities. In order to do this they have changed their recruitment processes in order to make them more inclusive.

A disabled trainee solicitor who joined Reed Smith in 2016/2017 said: “I applied to Reed Smith because of the firm’s close work with leading disability organisations. The firm’s commitment to making the legal profession more accessible to disabled candidates is what struck me most and motivated me to apply.”
