Reasons to work for a charity

Category: Returnships (Returning to work)

According to the UK Civil Society Almanac 2018, the UK voluntary sector workforce has increased by 35,000 since June 2016. Employing over 880,556 staff, the charities sector contributes approximately £15.3billion to the UK economy, making it a highly profitable industry.

But it’s not just the success of the sector that makes it appealing to workers. In fact, there are a number of reasons why working for a charity’s one of the best moves you can make.

Working to make a difference

A huge 37% of British workers claim that their jobs are not making a meaningful contribution to the world. Working for charity organisations gives a sense of purpose while actually making a difference to real-life issues.

Meeting new people at work

People working in the charity sector tend to have one thing in common – a desire for change. This creates a network of like-minded and interesting people working together to create a positive outcome for a common goal.

Gaining insight and perspective

It’s all-too easy to get wrapped up in our daily lives without paying attention to what’s happening around us. In fact, it’s estimated that we spend an average of 135 minutes a day on social media. That’s a lot of time spent distracted from the bigger picture. Working for a charity changes that. It provides you with perspective on issues much larger than yourself. This, in turn, gives you greater insight into your own personality and perceptions.

Great experience

Having a charity on your CV looks good. It demonstrates your willingness to tackle issues affecting others and provides you with interesting skills and stories to share. Charity work can also be more varied than roles in the private sector. Employees can be assigned to diverse and challenging projects that can take them outside of their comfort zone.

Brilliant benefits

There’s a myth that charities pay poorly. In fact, some professional roles can rival the private sector when it comes to pay and benefits. Charities also offer 25 days' annual leave as standard.
