It is estimated that 1 in 10 people suffer from Dyslexia. Dyslexia can affect the way people learn, and is different for everyone. It is not just about reading and spelling, and it is not an indication of low intelligence. Undiagnosed, dyslexia can result in low self-esteem, high stress, behavioural problems, and low achievement.
On 19th July QBE's Workability Network welcomed Katrina Cochrane from the Positive Dyslexia Organisation to Plantation Place. Katrina has spent nearly 25 years in education - including 18 years as a Dyslexia Specialist. She spent 14 years with Dyslexia Action as Principal and Southern Regional Manager and four with the British Dyslexia Association as Head of Education and Policy
Over 70 QBE staff attended a highly educational and interactive event. Katrina was able to demonstrate to us what it felt like to suffer from dyslexia and to explain the recognise co-occurring conditions. A lively question and answer session followed the hour long talk. Nigel Terry Chief Risk Office and executive sponsor for the Workability Group then explained the support QBE provide to employees who may be dyslexic and the process involved.
Representatives from Employee Relations, CRES facilities and the Workability network stayed behind to assist with further queries.
The event was so successful and the feedback received so positive that further sessions have been arranged in the Chelmsford, Leeds and Stafford regional offices.
