Part-time work for over 50s

The words Jobs & Careers in white on a red VERCIDA branded background

After having worked for more than half your life, you may be looking to step back a bit from the gruelling pace you’ve endured for so many years. We have found that experienced professionals are always in great demand, so it shouldn’t be overly difficult to find a job within your field of expertise. This is especially true when only looking to work part-time.

All too often, older adults fear younger workers who feel threatened. However, when you are only looking to work part-time, they no longer see you as a threat. It’s understood that you are simply looking to supplement your disposable income when living on retirement or perhaps you no longer require the high salary you once needed to bring home. If you are looking for part-time work and you are over 50, here are a few tips that might get you headed in the right direction.

In-house or flex working positions for part-time job seekers

Sometimes, you no longer want to meet the stress of commuting every day to the workplace. In cases like this, we suggest that you filter your searches on our website for those part-time jobs that also offer flexible or remote working arrangements. Certain fields lend themselves easily to flex and remote employment, so if your skills enable you to work securely from home, there are jobs that satisfy your needs.

Mentoring is a distinct possibility

One of the things you should be aware of is the fact that you cannot be discriminated against because of your age. However, being an older adult can often qualify you for a position which wouldn’t be open to a younger, more experienced person. Have you ever considered mentoring? That is one category we find is extremely active with the over 50 crowd, and one which can have you passing on your experience to a younger generation just getting their feet wet.

Talent development in great demand

Sometimes referred to as Staff Development, Talent Development is much in demand. Since you have probably gained a great deal of experience and expertise in your field, many corporations will hire part-time talent developers to offer regular workshops to train staff for continuing education in the field. HR doesn’t have the time or talent to host Talent Development seminars, so older professionals can be called upon to plan and offer workshops as needed. This is an extremely flexible type of role and one that really is best filled by a part-time experienced worker.

Consultancy positions available

In recent years, consultants have been in high demand. Quite often, businesses have limited resources for in-house talent, and so they hire part-time consultants in advisory positions. Marketing is one industry that often requires consultants with a good bit of experience. If you have worked in marketing, you just might be called upon to consult with the sales staff to strategize the best way of capturing a given market. Again, most companies don’t keep full-time marketers on staff, so a marketing pro not looking to work full-time is called upon to consult for several hours a week. Some consultants work with more than one company on a limited basis, but still keeping them under 20 to 25 hours a week.

No need for a benefits package

Quite often, the over 50 crowd no longer has need of a costly benefits package. They have put in their time with another company and now have a retirement fund sufficient for their senior years. If you are not yet of retirement age but have put in your time to be eligible for your entire benefits package, you just might find that future employers are happy to interview you. Those benefits packages do cost the company more than most can easily handle, and that’s why they entertain the idea of hiring part-time older workers in lieu of younger professionals who require those benefits.

The point being made is that it is no longer taboo to be an older adult looking for employment. If you are satisfied to work part-time, you may find that more doors are open to you than you had ever imagined. In fact, you may also be looking to move to a full-time position in the future, so this is a great opportunity to do just that. So, you’re over 50 and looking for part-time work?
