Over £50K Raised in Heathrow Runway Charity Marathon

Category: charity

Marathon on the runway? In the early hours of the 17th of June, 27 teams, comprising of 350 runners from across Heathrow, took part in the 3rd Midnight Marathon charity event.

The event witnessed teams of around twelve people running a relay with every runner completing almost the entire length of the runway, i.e., 2.2 miles, along with each team completing a full marathon distance.

This event helped to raise more than £50,000 for Hillingdon Autistic Care and Support, Help for Heroes, Oxfam and the Heathrow Community Fund.

The winning relay team, which consisted of colleagues working in the security section at the airport, completed the event successfully in just 3 hours 14 minutes and 27 seconds. They beat the team placed 2nd by only 7 seconds.

The individual leg record was smashed by a young Finance intern, Patrick Lucas, in just 11 minutes 21 seconds.

Many other runners also participated in a fun run section where they were allowed to cover the lengths of the runway to the maximum extent possible within the allocated time.

3rd Heathrow Midnight Marathon Event

This was the 3rd Heathrow Midnight Charity Marathon event. The last two managed to raise more than £70,000 (combined). In the history of this event, enterprises from across the airport have fielded teams including Atkins, Mace, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Met Police and UK Border Force.

This event is not simply action on the runway. It features the performance of colleague bands and other types of entertainment within Terminal 5.

A Charity Run Full of Unique Challenges

Organising a charity run on one of the busiest runways in Europe was not an easy task for the organizers of the event. To ensure that the runway is kept operational for both the early morning (4:30 am) and late-night flights (11:30 pm), the entire set-up of the event, as well as, its clean-up had to be done within a very small period of time.

The event would not have been possible without the support and contributions of the Heathrow colleagues, as well as, a number of other organisations, because the organisers had to adhere to some stringent security and time regulations.

Just after the event, the equipment like, the timing gates and other objects had to be removed from the runway. To ensure that safe operations can be resumed on the runway in time for the 1st arrivals, the entire runway had to be scanned and made sure that there were no objects lying around.
