Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) - How it can affect job seekers

While people who have different needs and possible restrictions in their day to day living, there are those who have problems getting a job. There are some people who suffer from a condition that restricts them to the point where it takes them 3.30am to 9.00am to leave for work. This is a lady who is mentioned in an article, who has OCD and finds it takes a long time to check everything before she leaves for work.

This is from an article I read in Daily Mail 3rd Oct, which highlighted that the condition as restrictive as illustrated and so therefore it affects sufferers daily lives, as they are constantly checking and possibly worrying that everything is in place.

It cannot be easy in finding a job, while it is very commendable in always having everything in place, there is always the possibility that this person is so preoccupied in having everything in order, their concentration levels may be slightly hindered.

It is described as “being a curse that destroys people’s lives” as it controls the way in which an OCD sufferer lives.

In the article it described how comedians can poke fun about people with this condition, while to them it seems funny to them, those who have the condition it can be stressful for them.

Research has shown that those with OCD have imbalances in serotonin, which is an important chemical in the brain involved in emotions and there is also a psychological element too, with symptoms getting worse in times of stress.

As I mentioned earlier about continually checking things, there are other types of OCD. Contamination is one, where there is the continual cleaning of surfaces and areas, hoarding everything and anything that may be useful at a later date. Orderliness, to have everything just right and stacked in a certain way. Avoidance is where an individual will go great lengths to avoid objects, places, person/people that might trigger their OCD.

This therefore can affect how sufferers look for jobs, in particular areas, by how they travel to work, and how they would cope with certain situations at work.

Anyone who has a condition which affects their daily life may therefore be constantly looking for approval and encouragement in that environment.
