Katie is the section manager of the mobile maintenance train (MMT) or ‘workshop on wheels’ based out of Derby. She is responsible for the safe planning and delivery of maintenance as well as the welfare of 11 members of staff
The MMT is revolutionising the way in which track maintenance is carried out, its key feature being that it allows workers to operate within an enclosed environment, protecting them from the elements and other trains and allowing engineering work to take place without the whole line having to close.
Year Katie joined the Scheme: 2009
Why did Katie become a Network Rail apprentice?
“I did Physics and Maths A levels at college – but I was always more suited to learning on the job. An apprenticeship catered to that perfectly.”
What’s been the highlight of her time at Network Rail?
The progression she’s enjoyed and realising her strengths: “I feel like I’ve properly earned the apprenticeship because I’ve worked my way up step by step!”
The many friendships Katie’s made through the Scheme also stand out – as well as the support for further education. “I now have an HNC [Higher National Certificate] and I’ve been sponsored by the company for my Foundation Degree, which will open up more career moves. I’ve never been more grateful.”
“Being a Network Rail apprentice has given me a fantastic support network because I showed a willingness to learn. Everything I’ve wanted to do has been supported.
Remember that an apprenticeship can give you a lot of extra life skills as well as just the specific skill you’re learning; I’ve learned how to budget and manage teams and more. You’ll gain skills you’ll need wherever you end up!”
