Case Study – Network Rail are proud to be a finalist in Business in the Community Inclusive Culture Award.
Motivate
In 2011, an independent review of Network Rail’s approach to recruitment and promotion in regards to diversity and inclusion made for difficult reading, but provided a firm platform for change.
A new position, Director of Diversity and Inclusion, was created to support the ambition of becoming a more open, diverse and inclusive business.
Act
Network Rail launched its Inclusive Leadership Programme in 2012, including training and tools to help employees manage unconscious bias. In 2013, further foundations were introduced, including workforce monitoring, transparent HR processes, six new staff networks and the appointment of a diversity and inclusion team.
In 2014, Network Rail created a business-wide strategy called ‘Everyone’ to reinforce the inclusiveness of its approach and to stress relevance of this to employees, customers and suppliers.
Events, videos and sponsorship of national awards culminated in ‘Everyone Week’, when the women’s network conference launched the ‘Your Story’ campaign, enabling women to tell colleagues the good, bad and ugly experiences of their working environments.
Impact
More than 2,600 leaders have attended the inclusive leadership programme and the new staff networks have gained nearly 1,000 members. Network Rail now has more than 80 Diversity Champions and 30 Trade Union Equality Representatives.
