To celebrate international Women’s Day 2018, we invited some of our female role models to talk about their role, celebrate their achievements and talk about why it’s important to press for progress. Progress comes in many forms.
Lorna Brown Is a Senior Conformance Engineer for one of our subsidiary companies, Network Certification Body (NCB). She uses her expertise to assess projects so their designs are in accordance with European accessibility standards. Her works helps to create accessibility in stations across Europe.
“I have been nominated by NB-Rail as a member of the working party developing the latest revision of the European standard for accessibility. I love using my knowledge to help create accessibility to stations around Europe, it gives me a great sense of pride. I am a corporate member of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) and working towards my professional qualification to become a Chartered Engineer through the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
I feel privileged to be part of an organisation that recognises the women in engineering and highlights what we do to inspire other women to take a similar career path. I am getting involved in more initiatives like school careers events and the Women in Rail, Big Rail Diversity Challenge to inspire the next generation of women!!”
Susan was the first female Station Manager in Glasgow Central Station. She leads the station team to deliver excellent standards of customer service and ensures we operate a safe and secure station environment for our customers.
“I joined Network Rail as an Occupational Health and Wellbeing Manager in August 2014. My role was based within the Route Safety Team and provided me with significant exposure across the route and wider network where I quickly developed a passion for the complexity and diversity Network Rail offers. I have been constantly encouraged and supported in my career, which lead to being successful in November 2016 as the Station Manager at Glasgow Central Station.
I am proud to have achieved a goal I set myself after a visit to Glasgow Central Station during my induction period, to be the Station Manager.
Since joining I have also been proud to have developed initiatives in the Glasgow Central Station that that have resulted in a reduction of passengers accident rates by 48% in the last year, supporting our Safety Vision “Everyone Home Safe Every Day “
Anthea is the Head of Consents and Sustainability, IP Southern and the chair of our gender equality network, Inspire. The employee network supports women in all business areas of Network Rail to fulfil their potential.
“I am passionate about increasing opportunities and working conditions for women, to ensure that our environment supports a sense of safety and wellbeing. I want to support Network Rail to become an employer of choice, for both women and men alike, as Chair I have the opportunity to influence this.
Inspire provides a mirror for the organisation as well as personal development and networking opportunities for our members. I have led the creation of regional and local groups and toolkits to support culture change. Last year we launched an Allies programme to encourage men to join the gender equality conversation. Membership has increased from 150 members to 770 and is likely to reach 1000 by April 2018.
#Pressforprogress and International Women’s Day is about celebrating the achievements of women. Achievement for me is about helping others to be the best they can be and developing teams who want to outperform their previous successes. Leading the Inspire Network provides me with so many opportunities to do this.”
