Why network administration needs to become more diverse

Category: Staff Network Group

Computer wizardry is important to every workplace. There’s almost no organisation on earth that doesn't rely on a network of computers for its essential business functions. The popular image of tech support in the UK is very much a white-and-male one. This doesn't match up with reality, though. It could be someone administering a network with thousands of users or someone setting up a new printer. Anyone with the right skills and aptitudes can do the job. Want to be a network administrator or a tech support professional at a workplace that's committed to diversity? Explore VERCIDA's job listings today.

Everyone uses computers so anyone might be a good systems administrator

While the digital divide still exists, particularly among marginalised groups, computers and smartphones are everywhere. Most of us are happy just to use them and to trust in the magic that keeps them working. But, the more people are exposed to information technology, the more people will be interested in managing and maintaining it. Hiring more women for these roles can help companies bridge diversity gaps well and quickly.

Diversity improves productivity and performance

If you hire people with the same cultural background, gender, or ethnicity, you inherently limit the outlook of your employees. Network administration and tech support require commitment, creativity and meticulous attention to detail. A diverse team is smarter, more agile and more productive. And as IT-related groups are often the least diverse, it makes sense to make diversity a priority in recruitment.

The right qualifications and skills

If you're interested in being a network support professional or a network administrator, look through the VERCIDA jobs directory. You need to be analytical, detail oriented and a good communicator. Sometimes you'll have to explain some very technical details to someone who fears and dislikes computers! A bachelor's degree in a computer field helps. Certifications, like those from Cisco or Microsoft, are also invaluable
