National Inclusion Week at Department for Transport

I’m Karys and I work in the Diversity Inclusion team at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). We’re big supporters of National Inclusion Week - the annual campaign to raise awareness of the importance of inclusion in the workplace.

Our Executive team recognise the business benefits of having an inclusive workforce, so supported this by allowing staff time to attend sessions.

For our first event under the theme of community, we arranged for over twelve organisations to support us including South Wales Police, Samaritans, Autistic Spectrum Disorder Employment Support (ASDES), Macmillan cancer support services, Stonewall, Chwarae Teg and Terrence Higgins Trust.

People had the opportunity to sign up for interactive sessions including a foraging walk around the building (despite the awful weather) hosted by our very own Bio-Diversity team, or simply visit the information stands. Over lunch time there were activities allowing staff to learn something new and try something different. Fun was had at the ASDES photo booth where staff were invited to share, using a speech bubble, some of their own traits. The photo booth was a fun way of demonstrating that many of us have similar traits and hurdles that we face in everyday life.

Another popular display, ‘DVLA through the ages’ celebrated how far DVLA has come since 1973, with old internal newsletters promoting events such as Miss DVLA. South Wales police even tweeted a photo of us with their PRIDE car.

Many sessions were hosted by our staff for staff and this was the opportunity to share and promote our ‘internal communities’ such as, photography club, DVLA band, PCS, Relaxation & Meditation, Mental health & me.

The event was a great success and I received lots of positive feedback which made the event really worthwhile. Photos speak a thousand words, so please enjoy these taken on the day.
