My disability is stopping me getting a job

My disability is stopping me getting a job

A disabled candidate claims that she cannot find a role - despite attending 150 job interviews - due to her condition.

Zoe Hilton-Webb was born with Apert syndrome, a genetic disorder characterised by the premature fusion of skull bones.

According to Ham High Newspaper, Hilton-Webb has been invited to over 150 job interviews by prospective employers and recruiters, yet she still has not been made one single offer – something she believes is solely down to her disability.

Hilton-Webb is now campaigning for equal employment rights for disabled jobseekers. She explained in an interview with the publication: “I have been interviewed in corridors, store cupboards and waiting rooms.

“Each time I’ve received different excuses saying I am over-qualified or under-qualified, or haven’t got the right level of qualification, even though I have the certificates and experience to prove it.”

Hilton-Webb has all the relevant qualifications to pursue her dream career in schooling, having attained a two-year BTEC in Health and Social Care, yet the fact remains she cannot find employment.

She told a Channel 4 interviewer: “I’m really fed up. I’m feeling really depressed at the moment, I’m attending all these interviews and not getting anywhere. I think it’s due to my disability.”

Difficulties faced by disabled candidates trying to progress in the world of work is an issue which Recruitment Grapevine has unfortunately seen too many times before.

A recent interview with Jane Hatton, Founder of Evenbreak (a recruitment agency which specialises in helping disabled candidates find jobs), shed some light on why recruiters are still refusing to tap into the talent pool of disabled candidates.

She explained: “Disabled people have the same diversity of talents, skills and experience as the rest of the population, and often bring additional strengths, developed through having to navigate around an inaccessible world.

“It is important for employers to look at employing disabled people as a business decision, not a charitable one.”
