The Executive Leadership Council (ELC) has honoured Carla Harris, Vice Chairman, Global Wealth Management, and Senior Client Advisor with its 2017 Achievement Award for her commitment to diversity, inclusion and the development of future black leaders.
Harris, a former ELC Board Chair, was presented with the award by American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault, at the organization’s annual gala on 26th October.
The theme for the 31st annual gala was “Own Your Future: Now More than Ever" and Harris’ remarks began with “Now, more than ever we must L.I.V.E.” and she framed her thesis around the acronym.
“Lead unapologetically, authentically and unabashedly. Be Intentional about having a diverse and inclusive environment,” Harris told an audience of 2,000 including many of corporate America’s leading CEOs, senior executives, thought leaders and politicos. Exercise your Voice because it is at the heart of your power, you can’t be in the room and say nothing” said Harris. In the end, it is all about Execution. We all have the intellect and experience to produce any outcome that we really care about, especially as it relates to diversity and inclusion. If we couldn’t execute then we wouldn’t be in this room, so let’s get it done.”
“If you have been invited to the room, you belong in the room,” she added. “If you are in the room then you have a seat at the table. If you have a seat at the table then you have a responsibility to speak.”
The annual gathering of global black business leaders continued its 30-year tradition of serving as a venue for networking and celebration of business achievement.
The goal of the Executive Leadership Council is to increase the number of successful black executives, in the board room and C-suite — both domestically and internationally — by adding value to their development as corporate leaders throughout the life-cycle of their careers thereby strengthening their companies, organisations, and communities.
