MCA: Connect Ships, Ports & People

The MCA’s Director of Maritime Safety & Standards said that the shipping industry make the people who they work with a priority. The Permanent Representative of the UK to the International Maritime Organisation, Katy Ware, was speaking at the IMO World Maritime Day Parallel Event in Panama. ‘Connect ships, ports and people’ is the theme of this year.

As a part of that, Katy Ware was chairing a panel that was discussing about the challenges faced by seafarers including how to adhere to the regulations and changes to the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping, called the Manila Amendments.

Katy said "that they must accept that humans are not only an element of their industry, but they are the very core of shipping". She added that humans are the secret of the success of the shipping industry and the industry is a victim to their failures.

A human-centred approach is required where they can design tasks and equipment to match the natural capabilities of people rather than trying to adapt the people as per the inadequate tasks and equipment. Katy asserted that it is "vital to turn away from a culture of blame and set the stage for people to succeed". She further said that everyone needs to acknowledge that when things go from bad to worse and the procedures are unable to cope, it is only the resourceful creative human that can save the situation.
