Low percentage of BAME coaches is 'not right' says Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew

Low percentage of BAME says Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew

Alan Pardew has urged football's governing bodies to do more to promote coaches and managers from black and ethnic minority groups.

The Crystal Palace manager has expressed his concern at the lack of diversity in coaching in English football and the limited opportunities for ethnic minorities.

There are just six black or ethnic minority football managers currently working at the 92 clubs in the Premier League and Football League - Queens Park Rangers’ Chris Ramsey, Huddersfield’s Chris Powell, Carlisle’s Keith Curle, Leyton Orient’s Fabio Liverani, Burton’s Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Brighton’s Chris Hughton.

That number is in stark contrast to their representation on the pitch and Pardew believes more should be done to encourage coaches from black and ethnic minority groups.

“The percentage of Afro-Caribbean players to coaches is not right,” said Pardew, who will come up against Ramsey when Palace host QPR on Saturday.

“It is something that needs to be spoken about and something we need to work on as a Football Association. And chairmen up and down the country need to give more chances.

“I feel that a lot of black players do not go into coaching courses because maybe they feel it will not help them, but it will. We need to see a greater influx of Indians and Africans entering our coaching system and getting jobs.”

Pardew wants to promote opportunities for coaches from ethnic minorities at Palace. He believes Ramsey, the only black or ethnic minority managers in the Premier League, is doing a good job at QPR.

“This opportunity has come for Chris at a time when he has done everything he could as a coach,” said Pardew. “He has done all the roles and has done them brilliantly.

“He has done a terrific job so far. That QPR team has improved under his tutorage.”
