Lloyds Charities Trust announces three-year charity partnerships with Build Change & Whizz-Kidz, as part of its new strategic focus.
LCT will donate £100,000 per annum over three years to Build Change, who will use the funds to build resilience to disasters in urban low-income communities in the Philippines and Colombia by retrofitting (structurally strengthening) more than 900 homes. The project will train more than 1,000 builders, create more than 1,000 jobs and make 4,800 people more resilient to the destruction caused by natural catastrophes.
The initiative includes retrofitting 310 homes in Metro Manila in the Philippines and passing on skills to local organisations so the programme can be expanded to improve 500,000 homes.
This work complements the initiatives LCT funds through its ongoing relationship with RedR, an international disaster relief charity that trains first responders delivering on-the-ground support in catastrophe zones.
LCT’s partnership with Whizz-Kidz will help disabled children across the UK lead active and independent lives. Over the next three years, a donation of £50,000 per annum will enable a Mobility Therapist to provide essential equipment and support more than 470 disabled children and young people.
Chris Harman, Chairman of Lloyd’s Charities Trust, said: “Lloyd’s Charities Trust is delighted to announce our new three-year partnerships with Build Change and Whizz-Kidz, two charities who provide vital support to vulnerable communities both in the UK and around the world. Their focus on building long-term resilience aligns closely with LCT’s strategy of delivering sustainable solutions wherever they are needed”.
Elizabeth Hausler, Founder & CEO of Build Change, said: “Lloyd’s Charities Trust’s investment in prevention and resilience is a truly innovative way of preparing for the future. We are so grateful LCT has joined this important effort to save lives and prevent economic losses by building resilience in urban slums in Asia and Latin America.”
Ruth Owen, Chief Executive of Whizz-Kidz, said: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone at Lloyd’s Charities Trust for naming us one of their charity partners; their generous donation will make an enormous difference to the lives of disabled children and young people across the UK. The vital work our Mobility Therapists do opens up a world of opportunity to hundreds of disabled young people each year, by providing them with the right equipment at the right time. Thanks to Lloyd’s Charities Trust we’ll be able to help even more disabled children achieve their true potential.”
Lloyd’s new strategic direction has two objectives. First, given Lloyd’s role in covering global risks including natural disasters, it aims to help the global communities most at risk by supporting disaster risk reduction and relief initiatives (Build Change and RedR).
Second, as one of the UK’s leading financial institutions and a major employer and contributor to the economy, it focuses support on projects in the UK that tackle disadvantage and foster opportunity (Whizz-Kidz).
