‘Being employable’ is an extremely generic term that you’ll likely hear a lot during career events and in talks from representatives of companies – but what does it even refer to? Broadly speaking, this simply involves having the skills and personality traits that are seen as desirable by employers. Technical experience, is often only a necessity for engineering, medical and higher-level finance roles, so the critical part of being employable is your personality traits and your attitude.
Having the ‘right’ attitude is another phrase that most students are sick of hearing, so we’ll break it down into 2 clear areas here. The first, and most prominent, is the fact that nothing appeals more to an employer that a candidate who is enthusiastic, positive, and obviously passionate about the role they are applying for. This kind of attitude cannot be manufactured; and this is why you should apply to organisations that you have a genuine wish to work for and which will allow you to demonstrate your interest and knowledge of the field.
The second way of showcasing your attitude and appealing to an interviewer is through your extra-curricular activities and work experience. Your work experience does not have to be aligned to your chosen career path – it’s simply about demonstrating that you are a competent team player, that you can commit to roles and take on responsibility, and this is exactly the same for sports, hobbies and other activities; these all show that you have passion and are willing to throw yourself into new things alongside your academic studies.
Best of luck with your applications – remember to be positive and take a genuine interest with what you’re applying for, and populate your CV with all activities and opportunities that you have been involved in; these will demonstrate that you have the right attitude and underline the fact you are an excellent candidate.
