After her company’s inclusion in the Top 50 Employers for Women last week Fiona Cannon OBE, Lloyds Banking Group Director of Diversity and Inclusion, gives her top career progressing tips for women in business.
“Really make sure that you network. A lot of the time younger women are focussed on a doing a really good job, which is important. You need to be good at what you’re doing but you also need to make sure that people know that you’re good. That’s one of the big things that a lot of women don’t do because it takes some time but it’s really important to have a wider network of contacts because you never know when that might be useful.”
Get a sponsor
“Networking is one thing but get a sponsor, identify someone more senior who can support you and take an interest in your career and guide you in terms of what you’re doing.”
Be clear about what your non-negotiables are
“That’s in terms of any next steps you’re taking in your career. Ask yourself what are the things that are really important for you, that you’re not prepared to negotiate on and don’t allow those things to fall by the wayside. Sometimes you may feel you need to do things you aren’t comfortable with to fit in. Don’t. Be clear what your non-negotiables are and if those are not met, find another organisation. Don’t feel you have to mould yourself into something else, be true to who you are.”
Seize your opportunities
“A lot of women are uncomfortable of the ideas of goals and targets and quotas. They feel if they get a job they may be seen as only getting it because they’re a woman. You need to seize your opportunities. They come along in all shapes and sizes, you need to take it when it presents itself. If you’re good you ‘ll prove yourself when you start the role.”
