Lloyds Banking Group have been named Employer of the Year in the Stonewall Top 100 Employers.

Lloyds Banking Group operates the UK’s largest retail bank and is committed to recognising and supporting the needs of their customers and communities, as well as the needs of their colleagues. They are committed to improving their LGBT staff’s employment experience and creating an inclusive environment in which all of their employees can be themselves.

Through their Helping Britain Prosper plan, Lloyds Banking Group have made a public promise to consistently increase the engagement rate of their LGBT colleagues over the coming years. Championed by Karin Cook, Group Director, Operations, and Group Executive Sponsor for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, the Group’s responsibility towards LGBT individuals extends from colleagues to customers and the community. Karin has been a real asset to the Group, with her visibility, reach and impact being felt across the organisation throughout 2016.

Karin commented:

“I’m thrilled Lloyds Banking Group has been recognised as the leading employer for lesbian, gay, bi and trans people in the Stonewall Top 100. At Lloyds Banking Group, our goals are to become the best bank for customers, a company that reflects the diversity of modern Britain in our workforce, and provides an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone. Ensuring our LGBT colleagues are as engaged as other colleagues is important for meeting our commitments on inclusion and diversity as part of our Helping Britain Prosper Plan. This award recognises the progress we’ve made in this space. I’m extremely passionate about ensuring our LGBT colleagues can bring their whole selves to work. In 2017, we will continue to listen to colleagues, using their feedback to drive priorities to ensure we remain a top LGBT employer, and focus on improving our processes so we can make the Group easier for the LGBT community to interact with. My goal is to see Lloyds Banking Group recognised as an LGBT employer and brand of choice and I am confident we will succeed in this.”

In addition to the strong leadership of Karin, Lloyd’s Banking Group runs a hugely successful LGBT Staff Network Group called Rainbow. The award-winning network, with almost 5,000 members and supporters, aids the Groups LGBT strategy by implementing professional development and promoting visible role models and allies within the organisation. The Group is now actively supporting the trans community by extending their private healthcare provision to include interventions and support for trans colleagues. In doing so, they became the first UK-owned company to make the policy addition with BUPA.

Through partnering with Mermaids UK, Opening Doors London and the Albert Kennedy Trust, the Group has launched their new colleague volunteering programme to support the work of these charities. So far, colleagues and leaders have volunteered 1,000 hours to the scheme and raised £30,000 throughout the past year. They have also supported awareness days throughout 2016, including Bisexual Awareness Day and Transgender Day of Visibility, with new training tools, social media campaigns, and by flying the bisexual flag and transgender flags at 35 of their key sites. Lloyd’s Bank’s ‘For Your Next Step’ campaign also featured a same-sex marriage proposal, which has been well-received by the LGBT community and reported in both LGBT and mainstream press to positive feedback.

The Workplace Equality Index is a tool designed to help measure an organisations performance and progress in LGBT equality and inclusion. By using this framework, an organisation is actively demonstrating a commitment to LGBT equality – to staff, service users and customers. The Stonewall Index is now in its thirteenth year and received more participation than ever with over 430 employers joining and a record 91,248 responses to the staff feedback questionnaire. There was also an improvement in overall scores with all those listed having an average score of 74%.

It has been proven that people perform better when they can be themselves. Stonewall works with over 700 employers to demonstrate that creating an inclusive workplace is not only the right thing to do, but is also crucial to their success. Through their Diversity Champions programme, Stonewall helps employers across all sectors and industries create workplaces where lesbian, gay, bi and trans staff can be themselves and, because of this, thrive.

Lloyd’s Banking Group was also tipped first in the Top Employers in Wales, Top Employers in Scotland and Top Financial Services Organisations categories.

Ruth Hunt, Chief Executive at Stonewall commented:

“Congratulations to the 2017 Stonewall Top 100 employers for your outstanding achievements, and thank you to all who took part. You are at the forefront of driving LGBT inclusion in the workplace and we are incredibly proud to work with you. With your continued partnership, we can ensure that all lesbian, gay, bi and trans employees across Britain are accepted without exception.”
