Testimonial

Hi,

I’m Liz and I’m a Lead Technology Delivery Manager working on National Police and Fire Systems in the Home Office.

You may have seen the article from Curtis that we’re advertising for 8 roles to work in our Police and Public Protection Technology team.

I have been a Lead Technology Delivery Manager for two years, and it’s a job I absolutely love. I lead a team of dedicated and talented product and delivery managers, maintaining several legacy systems and leading the design and delivery of new products and services for users across policing, and fire and rescue.

There is definitely no such thing as a typical day; I relish the challenges of leading such a diverse and busy portfolio. My role includes working with my team to develop strategic roadmaps for our products, addressing delivery issues to meet key milestones and working with senior stakeholders across policing and other agencies to ensure our products are aligned with user needs. I also manage key supplier relationships, programme budgets and the professional development of my team.

I have a background in operations and project management, rather than technology. After school, I worked in hospitality, then finance for several years, during which time I studied for an Open University degree in Politics. In 2006 I applied to join the Home Office, working initially on criminal justice reform projects, then in immigration. My responsibilities have included projects to digitise the application process for those coming to work in the UK, managing a national network of specialist engagement teams working with families without an immigration status and leading a randomised control trial of ‘nudge’ messaging to support customers at the point their visas expire.

In 2019 I had the opportunity to apply for the Lead Technology Delivery Manager role and felt it was not to be missed. I was absolutely right. My favourite thing about my work is seeing the real-world impact. It’s a fantastic feeling to know that services we are developing will support the government’s strategy to address violence against women and girls and keep illegal weapons off the streets, for example.

I would recommend a career in the Home Office to anyone. As a lone parent, the flexible working arrangements, generous annual leave and other benefits have enabled me to develop my career alongside caring for my daughter – and all while doing fascinating, stimulating work surrounded by amazing people.

I hope this has given you a bit of an insight into the work of a Technical Delivery Manager and has made you think about applying. The full advert is available on the Civil Service Jobs website; the closing date is 23:55 on 8 June 2021.

We’ll be sharing more insights from colleagues working in different roles and at different levels across the Home Office in the near future; in the meantime, you can check out our currently advertised vacancies here.
