Recruitment Business Partner at Aon

The words “flexible working” are becoming more and more common in today’s workplace, with advantages for both the employer and the employee.

“Flexible working” is different from “working from home”. “Flexible working” gives employees the freedom to manage their own time, a step change away from the typical 9 to 5. I appreciate in some areas that “flexible working” is not viable but for many employees it could mean having the flexibility to better meet your own personal needs; reducing commuting time / commuting expenses. With a simple change to our working style, our well-being and work life balance improves. For employers it can boost the employee morale, improve retention and help with employee engagement, productivity and creativity.

Aon are committed to developing working practices and policies that support work-life balance. This could mean you need to work from home for the day, working at another office, working in a quiet zone, or in a meeting room fitted with high spec technology. This could also mean being able to adjust your core hours start/finish time to fit into your own life style. Changing your hours may help with child care, allow you to attend a gym class or avoid rush hour - the list could go on and our individual needs will change through the various stages of our working lives.

My experience of flexible working at Aon has been very positive, resulting in increased engagement. I generally prefer working in the office than at home, but I know I have the option to work from home when I need or want too. I have adjusted my core hours slightly, and I start and finish earlier. This allows me to attend gym classes and complete day to day chores/errands which typically I would have done at the weekend. Overall it gives me a better work-life balance. Aon gives me confidence to explore different options with my manager and I feel where possible they will do their best to accommodate.

Walk to the gym this summer!

In general, most people associate going to the gym for the physical benefits that exercise gives, but I associate it with improving mental health and the psychological benefits that exercise gives me. I go to the gym five times a week most weeks, even getting up at 6.30am to fit in a 30 mins virtual spinning class if I know I am stretched for time that day. Additionally, I love the social connection and friendships that have I formed at the gym and really enjoy giving encouragement and support to others. For me personally being able to exercise really increases my mood and gives me time to clear my mind and switch off from the day, therefore the flexibility Aon gives me is… priceless.

We all have different personal circumstances, and aside from my personal experience it’s great to see Aon be supportive of colleagues around me and in my team, for example allowing for volunteering, dog fostering and needing to work from home, running at lunch, childcare pick up and even being able to attend their children’s assembly or school event by adjusting working hours for the day. This really makes me proud so say “I’m from Aon”.

My advice for anyone would be to think about what’s important to you; what will make you achieve your goals and help ease the stresses and strains of daily life? Compensation and core benefits aside what do you value in the workplace? What would give you a better work-life balance?
