Leeds Beckett colleagues, students and alumni joined an estimated 40,000 people in Leeds city centre!

The university has taken part in the city’s Pride parade celebrations since 2014 as a visible statement to our commitment to worldwide love and equality.

Senior Lecturer at Leeds Beckett and Chair of the university’s Rainbow Rose forum Ian Lamond said: “This year was another amazing Pride, with over 100 students, staff, family and friends forming our part in the parade. It really makes you feel proud to be part of Leeds Beckett. The crowd this year, supporting the parade as it promenaded through the streets of Leeds city centre was wonderful. We received regular whoops and cheers in support of our participation.

“The theme we adopted this year was Pride is still a Protest: Supporting LGBT+ Voices in Higher Education. It is important that we recognise that LGBT+ rights and freedoms are human rights, both globally and locally.

“Campaigning is just as important now as it has ever been. Pride is rightly about celebration, but we must not forget that same-sex relationships and Trans/Non-binary identities are still criminalised in many countries, with some still having the death penalty.

“Even within our own country we are seeing a rise in LGBT+ hate crimes. Rates of lifetime suicide attempts by members of the Trans community are vastly higher than the national average. We’ve come a long way, but there is much, much, more sill to be done.”

Leeds Pride is Yorkshire’s biggest celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Trans* life, and this year the celebrations boasted a number of live shows, events and a city-wide parade featuring around 120 walking floats.

A number of local and national organisations joined the parade, including Barclays Bank, ITV, Nando’s, the Royal Mail and Leeds Beckett University.

A DJ booth and number of live performances kept crowds entertained into the late evening, fulfilling the promise that Pride 2018 was set to be the biggest and best celebration so far.
