American Express: Vice President wins Leader of the Year Award

The UK’s leading figures in business and technology came together today to celebrate the winners of the annual 2014 FDM everywoman in Technology Awards. The achievements of this year's winners demonstrate that the tech sector offers great career opportunities for women possessing a wide range of talents and attributes. They are all role models who will encourage and inspire more women into a sector that both challenges and rewards in equal measure.

Research released in January 2014* found the tech sector to be thriving with almost 44% of UK tech firms planning to hire more staff over the year ahead. The government has indicated its desire for the UK to be a leader in the field of technology and by celebrating the achievements of today’s award winners, the industry takes a positive step in communicating the opportunities within this fast paced, ever changing industry.

Katrina Roberts, Vice President – Global Network and International Consumer Technologies Europe – was recently named Leader of the Year in a Corporate Organisation for the FDM Group’s “everywoman in Technology Awards.” The FDM everywoman in Technology Awards aims to reverse the decline in the numbers of women holding careers in UK technology. The everywoman award was launched four years ago in part to ensure young women and girls see people achieving success in the technology sector so that they become inspired to pursue a similar path. Award winners fell into several categories, including entrepreneurs, rising stars or leaders in FTSE 100 companies.

Katrina’s award recognized a woman operating in a senior technology role within her organization who is making a contribution to the strategic direction of the business.  Katrina received her award in part for the work she does to encourage women to have successful careers in technology, including her sponsorship of the UK @spire program with school girls and her mentoring and coaching of women across AET.

Of the honor, Katrina said, “I am overwhelmed and incredibly proud to win this award. I am privileged to work for a great company that supports women, and I’m surrounded by inspirational colleagues who encourage me to try and make a difference. I hope this award will inspire women to both join AET and realize that they can reach their potential.”

Nigel Greenwood, Vice President, GNICST, also credited Katrina: “I was absolutely thrilled to see Katrina win this prestigious award for her role in the UK IT industry.  As a female leader in technology, she is making a real difference for women and girls entering the IT sector in American Express and beyond. This external recognition has already created some wonderful connections to further our cause.”

Maxine Benson MBE, Co-Founder of everywoman comments, “With 44% of Technology CEOs expected to increase headcount in contrast to 23% across all industries**, it is imperative that more women enter the sector. The organisations involved in today’s Awards are the forward-thinking companies that are already committed to that and the women we are celebrating are role models whose stories and achievements will open the eyes of more young girls to realise that studying STEM subjects can lead to an exciting, rewarding career.”
