Testimonial.

I was first attracted to applying for positions within HMRC as I was looking for a long-term job with security and the opportunities I saw at HMRC stated that this was possible. I spent my first 10 months as an advisor on Taxes which centred around telephony work, then an internal temporary team leader position became available. I applied for the role and was successful, and was then put on a three month contract as a team leader. This was an amazing opportunity, as this gave me the ability to gain the relevant skills and experiences for when a permanent post opened up. The experience gained from my temporary promotion helped me build my competencies, skillset and leadership skills, which then gave me the confidence to secure a permanent post. I have been at HMRC for three years.

Some of my highlights from my time at HMRC have been from a variety of development programmes I have been involved in. I volunteered as a Business Ambassador for HMRC for a period of two years and through this I got the opportunity to go out into schools and help deliver workshops to teach students about employability skills. Sometimes these are full day events which involve me leading a class and facilitating the activity myself. It is great that HMRC provides me the opportunity to do this as it is really rewarding to be able to experience working in schools and giving students an unforgettable experience. I have also taken part in the Princes Trust programme through HMRC, where I spent 20 days across a 12 week programme, working with a group of unemployed youths. Here I helped the group develop their skills and confidence by working with them on different projects, including fundraising, to renovate a community centre. From this the young people got a great sense of achievement from completing a task and being able to see the difference they made. In work, I have had the opportunity to manage different workloads on post and telephony work. I have managed a diverse range of people and become familiar with the different types of adjustments HMRC put in place to support staff. I have put myself forward to get involved in the recruitment process and spent some time having the opportunity to interview prospective employees for the contact centre. I feel from having these type of opportunities, I am helping to shape the future of HMRC.
