Coming Out in 2001 was the first time I’d navigated lots of feelings to the extent that I did; some liberating, some scary, some joyous and some deeply sad.
[Courage - Relief - Rejection - Love]
Coming Out has come to represent personal significance and gratitude, comfort and empowerment. It is also a poignant reminder that as LGBTQ+ people we can too often end up losing out on time and on opportunity, spending wasted energy masking our selves and our lives in fear and in search of acceptance.
This Coming Out day I want those who feel safe and ready to offer the world their authenticity, those parents about to be honoured by their children’s truth, those who cannot open the door and take the step out due to being unsafe where they are and those who simply aren’t ready or don’t want to come out to know that you are loved and respected and we are proud of you.
…and for the future, I hope that the conversation becomes less scary, the big moment less needed and that fears of being unsafe, rejected and not seen are replaced by empowerment, strength and celebration as we all work to keep our world moving in the right direction for all of us.
