Jobs in the forestry industry

Roles within the forestry and logging industry are quite expansive and varied, as are the salaries. Some of the positions include chainsaw operators, forest workers, foresters, forestry equipment operators, and engineers.

The role of the chainsaw operator focuses on felling trees, thinning foliage, or cross-cutting logs. If you like working outdoors, and being practical, this might be the kind of position for you. To be employable it will be advantageous to hold a chainsaw licence and crosscutting licence for this role.

The Royal Forestry Society provides a range of qualifications in forestry. These courses provide a preparation for a wide variety of roles.

Forest workers have various responsibilities focused on the maintenance of woodland environments, including pruning, addressing pest problems, building fences and paths. Forestry and woodland management qualifications at Level 2 or above are required to land a forest worker role.

Foresters take responsibility for management and surveys of woodland habitats, among other tasks. They’re required to have high-level knowledge and skill in multidisciplinary forestry, with the ability to coordinate contractors and other employees. A degree in forestry and other related subjects, along with two to three years’ experience are needed for this role.

Forestry mechanical engineers specialise in working with and maintaining heavy machinery and can be employed by large forestry companies. This is typically a graduate-level engineering role, though knowledge of agricultural engineering is an advantage.

For those considering a change of career, many skills acquired in other sectors are valued in the forestry and wood sector. Depending on the field of interest, there are various courses available on specific subjects.
