Jobs and careers for people with hidden disabilities

Jobs and careers for people with hidden disabilities

Three out of four of persons with disabilities don’t use a wheelchair or anything else that might visually signal their impairment to the outside world. If that’s you then you have a hidden disability. That’s a condition which may not be visible at a glance but can have a major impact on people's lives.

These conditions come with challenges. The most-common hidden conditions are epilepsy, autistic spectrum conditions, dyslexia, diabetes and acquired brain injuries. There’s a whole spectrum of disabilities or challenges that are primarily neurological in nature and some people struggle to find work as a result.

We want to help. We know that people with hidden disabilities have unique talents to bring to an employer. However, in practice people report some company’s management teams struggle to understand what a hidden disability is, whether it’s real or not, even whether it could exist at all. Sadly, to most people, a disability still means being in a wheelchair.

At VERCIDA, we do things differently. Our database of top employers across the country consider what a person can do – not what they can’t. That means, regardless of your ability or disability, you can search for your next job with confidence from the hundreds of vacancies on offer.

That is why we have chosen to focus on showcasing employers with disability positive jobs. These are employers who are not afraid to hire individuals from every segment of society.

Our partners that list on the VERCIDA website, from small firms to huge companies, share our commitment to inclusiveness. All will have disability-friendly policies in place, and offer a range of employment that requires different skillsets and capacities. Whatever your individual qualities and skills, there is something in our extensive database. See the jobs available now.

Your ability to contribute

We believe your ability to contribute to the workplace rests entirely within your training, education, skills and experience. And the employers we work with to offer disability positive jobs understand this, too. That is why we choose to work only with those companies that have established commitments to inclusiveness and diversity in place.

All employers are legally required to make reasonable adjustments to support disabled job applicants and employees. This means putting things in place to ensure disabled people can overcome disadvantages they may have in the workplace.

This could include:

  • Offering training or mentoring to support employees to develop
  • Making alterations to premises to improve accessibiility
  • Or, allowing extra time during selection ‘tests’.

These are just a few examples, but these types of adjustments can be important to help you through the early stages of applying for good jobs. And to help you settle into your new workplace. We believe that everyone has a useful skill. We want to help you find a job that puts that ability to good use.
