Jobs and careers for women in accounting

The words Flexible Working in white on a red VERCIDA branded background

Accounting is a career path which can be interesting and rewarding. It can also offer plenty of flexible opportunities that make it well suited to managing a good work-life balance.

Women who are interested in pursuing a career in accounting can find plenty of openings, and if you have the right qualifications and experience, finding a job that is a good match for your needs can be fairly straightforward.

Here are some of the reasons to consider an accounting career as a woman:

High demand in every region

One of the most important things about accounting careers is that accounting roles are available in just about every business there is. This means that even if you don't live in a major city and have no inclination to move to one, you can find a well-paid and rewarding position as a company accountant for a local business or you can work for an accounting consultancy and travel to new and interesting locations.

A key role that helps businesses

Accountancy is something that many business owners don't really understand or want to risk doing themselves because they lack the training, so being a good accountant makes you someone very important to a business. You can offer good advice that will help the business thrive and save money, as well as helping them to avoid any issues when it comes to financial compliance or tax.

Part time options

Another reason it can be a good plan for a female professional to work in accountancy is that it is a job that often has part-time options. While not all businesses can do this because they do need their accountant on site all the time, others who have accountancy teams or less demand for the accountant's skills are able to offer part-time roles or positions on a job-share basis.

This may not be what you are looking for early in your career, and naturally full-time roles are also available, but working in a specialism where part-time work can be a fairly common option is a big advantage should you want to work part-time after having children.

Home working options

Continuing on the work-life balance theme, another great thing about accountancy is that it can sometimes be done in part or fully from home. You may be able to find a job where you can work from home some or all of the time, making it a good choice if you would like the income of a professional job but would rather also stay at home with your children or avoid childcare costs and other issues.

Remote working has become more and more accepted in recent years as technology has made it possible to collaborate with colleagues wherever you are, and because accountancy is generally a job where you need peace and quiet and to work alone, it is one that can lend itself very well to this style of working. Another benefit to this is that you can avoid a costly and time-consuming commute, and help the environment!

Being your own boss

Accountancy, as we have said, is something all businesses depend on. However, not all small businesses need an accountant of their own to get the work done. Many choose to hire freelance accountants as and when they need them, and this means that there are a lot of accountants out there who work for multiple clients and handle all of their finances.

You can do this kind of work by working for a financial consultancy. However, it is also possible to start your own business as an accountancy specialist and work for the clients you choose. This may be something it is best to do after accruing some good experience in a conventional employment role, but being qualified as an accountant will give you this option if you want it in the future.

Accountancy is a great career path that can allow you to work with all kinds of different industries and businesses of all sizes and styles. You can also work with non-profit and public-sector organisations if that is what you prefer. If you are considering a career change or the best career to study for, accountancy has a lot of big pluses!
