Jobs and Careers for Autistic People

Jobs and Careers for Autistic People

Autism is something we are hearing more and more about in everyday life. This isn’t because cases of autism have suddenly skyrocketed, but because better education has led to a much wider understanding of the condition and its implications. This is also thanks to both increased media exposure and an accompanying rise in awareness and of what the disorder actually entails. In times gone by, it was assumed that those with autistic traits would be unable to contribute to society, we now know that this is not the case. Autistic people are able to contribute, both in individual workplaces and society at large.

It has been estimated that one in every 100 people suffers from some sort of autism, be it Asperger's syndrome or some other condition included in the autism spectrum of disorders. This makes it a much more common condition than was once thought. 1 in 100 people, or 1% of the population, might not sound like much, but it is a significant number.

A diagnosis of an autism-spectrum disorder should not stop you from finding employment. Many autistic people choose not to seek out employment opportunities because they feel that they will simply be rejected. We’re here to tell you that this doesn’t have to be the case. VERCIDA hosts a range of jobs for people with autism and Asperger's. We work with companies who have a proven track record in employing and accommodating those with autism

You might be looking for a new job because of:

  • Redundancy
  • Change in marital status
  • Change in your health
  • A move to another part of the country
  • A desire to do something different

Whatever the reason that you find yourself now looking for work, VERCIDA is on hand to help. We understand that applying for jobs and putting yourself out there is a nerve-wracking exercise at the best of times. For sufferers of autism this can be an even more difficult process, but the potential rewards are just as huge. Securing a job won’t just give you a source of income, it will also give individuals a sense of purpose and identity.

Because autism is still widely misunderstood by most people, those diagnosed with the disorder can find it difficult to get a job or training for a career. The difficulty in finding jobs for people with autism, especially the more severe cases, can have a knock-on effect which impacts the rest of their lives. Having a healthy professional life is a crucial component of an overall balanced lifestyle and positive outlook, it is therefore important that any autistic person who still feels able to hold down a job make some attempt to do so. The range of jobs for Asperger’s sufferers is constantly expanding. In fact, those jobs are increasingly often leading to access to careers for Asperger’s sufferers that would have been unthinkable not long ago.

While the stigma surrounding autism has begun to fade, it does still exist. This stigma sadly still makes it hard to find jobs for people with autism. That is unfortunate. Why? Because people with autism still have a lot to offer. In fact, many of them are brilliant despite the seemingly odd behaviours that accompany the disorder. Here at VERCIDA, we believe it is important to look beyond autism in order to help you establish a career perfectly suited to your abilities. We understand that many autism sufferers have exactly the same hopes and aspirations as the rest of us. Crucially, autistic people also possess many of the most valuable skills that employers look for. Only the most severe cases of autism should prevent individuals from finding work if they want it; we at VERCIDA are proud to be able to help with this.

Your Ability to Contribute

We believe the most important factor in the hiring process is what you have to contribute to prospective employers. The fact is that everyone has limitations of one sort or another. However, that is not what's important. What is important are the abilities you bring to the table – the abilities that will contribute to the success of your employer. That is what we are about; that is what our companies are about.

When sufferers of autism reach adulthood, they have the same drive to find employment as the rest of us. Finding and maintaining good employment is essential for maintaining good overall emotional health. While in some cases, such as jobs for Asperger’s adults, the roles that the autistic person can undertake might be more limited than usual, this isn’t always the case. In some cases, only the most minor, if any, additional accommodations need to be made. Hiring an autistic person certainly isn’t the mountainous challenge some people think it is.

Types of Jobs Available

We work only with companies looking to hire people from a broad cross-section of society. All of our companies have established policies of inclusiveness and diversity in place; policies they apply to the hiring process. Our companies are not interested in what you cannot do; they want to know what you can do. Working with companies that hire adults with Asperger’s is important to our overall aims and goals, which include helping to improve prospects and jobs for people with Asperger’s.

Our website spans nearly every geographic location and job sector in the UK. If you do not find career opportunities suited to your abilities today, come back and check with us in a few days. We are always adding new employers and listings.

What types of jobs are available?

You might be surprised by the range of industries that are now providing steady employment for autistic individuals. In fact, there are virtually no industries that autistic people can’t work in these days. The specific features of the disorder for each individual will determine the kind of work that they feel able to undertake and pursue.

Here are just a few examples:

  • Office/ clerical

As you may well suspect, there are more jobs for high functioning autistic adults, and there is an ever expanding list of companies who are willing to make accommodations for more severe cases. Usually, the patient themselves is best positioned to judge what they are capable of and what kind of work they feel comfortable pursuing. It is therefore important to let them take the lead with regards to finding employment. Our service will facilitate this process, making it easier than ever for autistic individuals to find work with employers who understand their condition.

The number and range of jobs available for high functioning autistic adults is constantly on the rise. Autistic individuals develop the same passions and interests as the rest of us, many have the same desire to turn these interests into a viable career. Whether it is as a stepping stone onto a long term career path, or a temporary job before moving on to something else, there are now more companies that hire autistic adults than ever before. Consequently, those with autism have a greater array of jobs from which to choose.

It doesn’t matter what form of autism you, or a loved one, is afflicted with, we can help you to find a suitable job. We help all kinds of autistic individuals to find work, our database contains plenty of jobs for high functioning Asperger’s, as well as the best jobs for autistic adults more generally.

Many autistic individuals sadly feel that they are unable to pursue the same employment opportunities as everyone else. Historically this has been somewhat true, there has been a considerate stigma surrounding conditions like autism. However, this is rapidly changing, there are now a wide range of businesses who are willing to hire autistic applicants, and to make accommodations to allow them to work in unfamiliar environments.

Here at VERCIDA, we seek to connect autistic individuals with the best employment opportunities around. We work with companies who are able to look beyond the stigma to make sure that autistic people know that they are still valued members of society like everyone else. We believe that helping to find autistic individuals, and others who might struggle to find work, to find suitable jobs is an important service.
