Job Hunting Over 50 - age discrimination?

Job Hunting Over 50 - age discrimination?

My experience of finding a job has at times been very frustrating. I had been in a job for several years where I had not been happy and felt that I could be using my talents in another setting. I had always felt I had underachieved as a student, so I did some courses and gained qualifications and started working in a different environment. Unfortunately that did not work out, as I have a weakness on my left side and the kind of work I was doing was quite physical and I needed to be physically fit, so I had to give that up.

I have now been out of work for three years and it doesn't get any easier as you get older. I applied for several jobs, wither being turned down at interview stage or not being successful in getting an interview. There lies the frustration. It would be good to hear from potential employers, with feedback as to why I was not successful in getting an interview. I want a job because it gives me not only an identity of who I am but of what I have been able to achieve but also a sense of belonging to the community. It is important for each one of us to be treated with the respect that we think we deserve.

While I am not working at the moment, I am doing various things within the community; I am involved in the local church and do other things in the village. I sing in the choir and we have just sung at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, which was a lovely experience, we have also sung at various cathedrals for evensong I go to a residential home a couple of times a week and talk to the residents. I have been able to build up quite a rapport with some of the residents and we can have a good laugh, always at my expense! I also play bingo with them and scrabble and through the church we do a bible study with the residents once a week. I enjoy these projects, however I feel that being employed would not only be extremely important financially, but would increase my self-esteem and independence. I can't help from believing that bias against my age and disability is preventing me from doing this.
