Jack was referred to the organisation via his DWP Job Coach, to participate in a 6 week Work Experience placement. This was quickly followed by a work trial, finishing with an offer of employment for a permanent role within the organisation.
Read on to hear about Jack’s personal journey into DSN, in his own words:
“I was in a bit of a rough spot, I hadn’t really held a proper job down since College. I’d been going the job centre a little while and doing some cleaning work but it really wasn’t sufficient. I had a good chat with my partner and it became clear that I was interested in doing support work. I really had no preference as to what sector or who I’d be helping, I just knew I fancied having a go at helping people.
My job coach turned me on to a work experience placement with DSN. It was a tough 6 weeks to be honest but definitely a trial by fire. I’d never really had a proper full time job. Certainly had never interacted with deaf people or used BSL. I’d never really been in a position to help someone with learning disabilities so it was a lot of new things.
By the end of the work experience I’d met a lot of lovely people who even 4 years later I’m still proud to both work with or support, and even both! I’ve learned new skill such as BSL. I’m currently doing my NVQ level 3 for lead adult social care. I was also promoted to senior support officer allowing me the opportunity to improve my leadership skills; and hopefully show our younger staff the best ways to support the individuals who need it the most. It’s been quite the journey and I can’t wait to see what’s next!"
