ITV winners at the Black International Film Festival 2016!

This year marked the milestone 10th anniversary of the Black International Film Festival (BIFF), a week-long festival which takes place in Birmingham. The festival culminated in the Movie Video & Screen Awards (MViSAs) ceremony on October 29th, hosted by Fiona Wade (who plays Priya Sharma in ITV’s Emmerdale) and Wil Johnson (who played Emmerdale’s Dom Andrews 2012-2014).

On the night ITV won the award for Best TV Channel and Charlene White (ITV News Presenter) won the award for Best Broadcast Journalist.  Amongst stellar performances on the night, accolades were awarded to the nation’s favourite actors and programmes, including a lifetime achievement award to Don Warrington MBE for his legendary work over the years. Also receiving an achievement award was Hollywood actor Nonso Anozie, of Game of Thrones fame, for his accomplishments and contribution to the industry.

Emmerdale’s Bhasker Patel, who was amongst the star-studded guest list, said he was “really happy to be a part of the MViSAs”. ITV strives to ensure diversity in their on-screen programming and in their workforce, ensuring they are applicable and accessible to all. Representing the diversity of modern society gives their programmes mass appeal and attracts the largest attainable audiences, with their most popular programmes attracting audiences of over 10 million. To guarantee ITV’s programmes and services justly reflect and engage with modern society, they likewise understand the significance of diversity within the teams behind the scenes and nurture a workplace ethos that is inclusive and open to all.

Taking the theme of Art Imitating Life, this year's Black International Film Festival put inclusion and diversity at the heart of its programme, with stories encompassing a wide range of real life controversies, struggles and disputes. Finally the MViSAs are procuring a national and international reputation, giving many overlooked black stars the recognition and appreciation they deserve. The Black International Film Festival remains as pertinent today as it was ten years ago when it first begun.
