ITV support the Asian Media Awards 2016

On the evening of Thursday 27TH October the Hilton Manchester Deansgate played host to the fourth annual Asian Media Awards. The awards celebrate the endeavours of media organisations in increasing diversity and present the very best of talent working in the Asian and mainstream media. It also serves as a platform for those working in the industry to network with organisations where they are significantly underrepresented.
Once again ITV showed their support of the awards by hosting the Shortlist Announcement at their London studios ahead of the Awards ceremony. Asif Zubiary, Commissioning Editor for ITV Entertainment, explained why they are proud to support the event – “we hope the awards might incentivise Asian creatives to strive to be the best in their field… and that some of you in the room tonight might, one day, contribute your skills to ITV. And if not us, then on screen, on air or on-line in front of as many people as possible”.
Winners on the night included Fatima Manji who received the award for Media Personality of the Year and Yasmeen Khan for Radio Presenter of the Year.
Honoured with the Outstanding Contribution to Media Award, Coronation Street actress Shelley King spoke of the obstacles she faced when embarking on an acting career after travelling from India to the UK in 1966. She said poignantly “If there is one thing…sadness that I have about this business and Asians in this business is that sometimes we don’t support each other. Because we have all had to fight to get there and be recognised.”
