International Men's Day 2016

International Men's Day 2016

Each year, International Men's Day (IMD) in the UK is observed by an increasing number of women, men and organisations across the country. On November 19, the accomplishments and contributions men and boys, of all backgrounds, make to their workplace, community, family, marriage and childcare were honoured.

There are over 60 events and celebrations taking place across the UK in November, including Parliamentary debates, community events, business events, conferences, film launches and exhibitions in aid of IMD.

This year’s theme in the UK continues to be Making a Difference for Men and Boys. The theme is designed to help more people contemplate what action we can all take to “Make a Difference” by focusing on some of the matters that affect Men and Boys including:

·        The difficulties faced by men as parents, in particular new fathers and separated fathers.

·        The high male suicide rate

·        Men’s health (including shorter life expectancy and workplace deaths)

·        The obstacles facing men and boys at all levels of education

·        The challenges encountered by the most marginalized men and boys in society (homelessness, boys in care, and the high rate of male deaths in custody)

·        Male victims and survivors of sexual abuse, rape, sexual exploitation, domestic abuse, forced marriage, honour-based crime, stalking and slavery

·        The negative depiction of men, boys and fathers

The main subject of attention at a national level for 2016 is “supporting boys with their academic, employment, personal, social and health education”.

IMD in the UK takes a gender inclusive approach in ensuring that matters and questions affecting women and girls are also answered. It understands the connection between gender and other factors such as sexuality and race which can heighten the inequalities affecting men and boys. It, therefore, invites every man, woman, girl and boy to unite and celebrate men and boys for their diversity and difference.

IMD aims to promote male role models, celebrate their contribution and draw attention to male health and wellbeing concerns, including highlighting discrimination and improving gender relations and equality, with the ultimate hope of creating a safer, fairer world.

There will also be a continuation of the attention on male suicide, which is a global concern. The day coincides with International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, therefore it is paramount that male suicide is given consideration as well.
