Meet RS Components Sam Macdonald National Account Manager
Babe Ruth — “Don't let the fear of striking out, keep you from playing the game”.
Sam's savviness with money hadn’t gone unnoticed by a school friend who first suggested she become a product buyer.
Living in Corby, Sam was familiar with RS Components, and, in 2010, she applied for a Warehouse Operative role to gain hands-on experience whilst studying, “RS appealed to me because my mum worked there, and I live in Corby. Everyone recognises RS as a great place to work.”
In 11 years, Sam has worked her way up through the ranks, but it was her first role as an Assistant Buyer at 21 that sparked her passion for buying.
“It was my first real purchasing job and the first time I had travelled and met suppliers independently. In my first week, I held a meeting with my largest supplier who we [RS] spent over £1 million pounds with. It was in this role that I was promoted to Buyer and recognised for my efforts within my product category.”
Despite opportunities to travel internationally to meet new suppliers and customers, the lack of female buyers within Sam's field hadn’t gone unnoticed.
“A female colleague and I were on an early flight to a conference, and we were the only two women on a plane full of buyers heading to the same conference. It was eye-opening and I questioned why there weren’t more women at the event…
…Once I had travelled to other conferences, I realised that there was a significant lack of female representation in the industry. At the time, my team at RS were evenly split and so, I hadn’t noticed the lack of representation at work.”
Sam’s experience taught her to show confidence and try everything regardless of what others thought,“There is one quote by Babe Ruth,‘Don't let the fear of striking out, keep you from playing the game’, I always think that you must try, what harm will it do? You won’t always get everything right all of the time”.
After several years in purchasing roles, Sam decided to get closer to our customers using the skills she had developed during her purchasing career.
As a result, she applied for her current role as National Account Manager in Corporate Sales.
Since 2018, Sam has been part of RS’ woman employee network group – Elevate, and in 2020, she became Chair.
Sam’s advice to other women in male-dominated roles is,
“Build yourself some real advocates that help build your confidence and encourage you to raise your head above the parapet and say something.”
When asked about her time at RS, she said,
"I love working for a business that makes a difference. We bring a lot of new products and solutions to people that help keep businesses moving – I’m from Corby, it’s the biggest employer in town, and I feel proud to work for this company.”
