Meet RS Components Lori Thomson Talent & Development, Coordinator

“I don’t do anything by halves.”

In April this year, Lori embarked on a new journey with RS Components.

With an eight-year career with us, her current role is unlike any she has previously held and for a good reason.

Despite working in Sales at the time, she knew that applying for the T&D Coordinator role would allow her to break into an area, which she had wanted to pursue for years – Talent & Development (T&D).

“I’ve wanted to move into T&D for years but didn’t have the skills to do so previously. This role is an entry into this profession and the reason why I applied. Doing a job whilst learning day to day and gaining new, high-level skills is great.”

The opportunities to learn and grow are essential for most, and that was no exception for Lori. With the support of her team who,“live and breathe empathy as it can be tough being a new mum whilst balancing work and home life,” her change in career whilst still on Mat leave was exciting “because, at RS, I’m given opportunities to grow.”

Additionally, it’s this growth that Lori refers too, which first influenced her decision to join RS Components.

“I don’t do things by halves, and that was the biggest difference when I joined RS. I knew this was a company that had the potential and the scope for a lifelong career. There are many opportunities to progress, either personally or professionally and now being part of the team that supports the growth of the great people around the business is exciting.”

Lori’s first few months as T&D Coordinator, on return from her year-long mat leave, saw her jump, full force, into a new project – the launch of our internal L&D platform, MyAcademy.

“MyAcademy is Electrocomponents internal learning platform. It helps facilitate our people’s ability to grow their skills in a flexible, diverse space by aligning their learning styles and skills whilst connecting them with people who can help further their careers. It also gives our people opportunities to share best practices and collaborate with different people from across the business – the platform brings everyone onto one network so all can benefit from it,” she shared.

Lori’s role was created to support the launch of MyAcademy and proved crucial by helping to curate content and get the platform ready for launch.

Lori revealed,“I work within the T&D team. We are a small team made up of talented experts in their fields and working on multiple projects at a time – I facilitate them to utilise their skills by using mine. I’m good at problem-solving and bring my experience along with that of our customer’s journey to the team.”

With aspirations to become an L&D Practitioner, Lori is currently completing an apprenticeship within this field to further her knowledge and expertise.

"RS has invested in me several times throughout my career, from professional sales accreditation to leadership training, and now I’m studying for a qualification as a Learning and Development Practitioner. It’s about aligning what I’m learning and putting it into practice to do the best job I can for my career, my team and for Electrocomponents," she stated.
