GSK: Inclusion Week

Category: Social Mobility

Image of the words diversity and inclusion

From 17th – 21st July, GSK celebrated inclusion week as a Global Company, and had speakers at GSK House and regionally. External speakers came along to help us all to reflect upon what diversity means for us and how all GSK employees can play a part in fostering inclusion and diversity. We also had a UK Recruiter training session from a Senior Disability Consultant at the Business Disability Forum on 20th July.

Monday 17 July: Authentic Leadership ‘Making Inclusion a Reality’ keynote speaker Stephen Frost

From 2007-2012, Stephen designed, led and implemented the inclusion programmes for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games as Head of Diversity and Inclusion for the London Organizing Committee. Stephen is a globally recognised diversity, inclusion and leadership expert and founded Frost Included in 2012. He works with leaders and teams to embed inclusive leadership in their decision-making and day to day business. His presentation will include the business case for real inclusion with clear and compelling key concepts and qualitative and quantitative evidence.

Tuesday 18 July: ‘Gender in the workplace’ external speaker Emma Cusdin

Transgender staff face distinct challenges in the workplace ranging from physical spaces such as ‘gendered facilities’, to verbal direct discrimination and harassment based on gender identity. Creating a trans-inclusive environment enables trans* staff to be themselves in the workplace and promotes acceptance among staff who do not identify as trans*. We were proud to welcome at GSK, as part of Inclusion Week, our speaker Emma Cusdin, an HR Professional at Thomson Reuters, Trustee at Gires, and Founder of ‘trans*formation’. The trans*formation group assists people who are trans, their families and workplaces and produced with Stonewall a number of materials for employers which GSK used to help form the Gender in the workplace policy and guide.

Wednesday 19 July: ‘The Stranger on the Bridge’ external speakers Jonny Benjamin, Neil Laybourn

You may have heard the amazing story of Jonny and Neil, who were the subject of a Channel 4 documentary. The Stranger on the Bridge tells the moving story of Jonny Benjamin. In January 2008, he stood on London’s Waterloo Bridge and prepared to take his own life. That was until a stranger walking across the bridge saw him and talked Jonny down from the edge. Jonny was taken to hospital and didn’t see the stranger again but was determined to find him and thank him for what he did. This led to an extensive social media campaign to find the man who saved his life. That stranger was Neil. This session was last held in GSK House during May’s Mental Health Awareness Week and is back by popular request for Stevenage’ s Lecture Theatre to give us a further opportunity to hear this inspiring talk.

Thursday 20 July: ‘The Age of No Retirement’ external Speaker Dr Jonathan Collie

We’d like to welcome you all to attend this event from the Founder of the age of no retirement Dr Jonathan Collie. This interesting session is all about exploring the incredible opportunities that arise from the fact that people are now living longer, healthier and more productively than ever before.

Babies born today have a more than a 50% chance of reaching their 100th birthday, and we can all (on average) expect an additional 10 years of healthy life more than our grandparents. “Big employers and big brands are only starting to scratch the surface of this opportunity – in terms of the multigenerational workforce; products and services that support the 100-year life; and the new life and (non-)retirement models that are emerging” reports Jonathan. Join us for a unique and eye-opening rethink of the concepts of Age and Older, and what this can mean for us!
