HSBC have been working with the Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer Scotland to create change in 2016.

Every three minutes, someone in the UK develops dementia – and the number of people living with dementia in the UK is set to rise to over one million by 2021. There is currently no cure for the progressive disease, which affect’s people’s memories, independence and ability to communicate.

Therefore, HSBC has been supporting the business and financial world to help create ground-breaking dementia friendly changes across the industry. As part of their partnership with Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer Scotland, the bank helped customers, employees and communities to raise awareness and improve the lives of those affected by dementia over the Christmas period.

This cumulated into the celebration of Elf Day.

Throughout December, events were held in local HSBC branches across the country, which enabled customers to talk to HSBC Dementia Friendly colleagues, learn about the Dementia Matters partnership and help to raise vital funds for these charities – whilst also discovering their inner elf.

Between 16th to 23rd December, every day was an Elf Day and was packed with family friendly activities and informational presentations, from which attendees took home HSBCs seasonal Tip Book with suggestions on how to help a loved one affected by dementia enjoy Christmas.

Elf Day was a national Alzheimer’s Society campaign with celebrations taking place throughout December in various locations throughout the UK.

About Dementia Friends

Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the largest initiative ever to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition through Dementia Friends and Champions going out into their communities with a greater understanding of dementia and some ways to tackle the condition, no matter how small. Dementia Friends are helping to create communities in which people living with dementia feel more understood and included.

They now have over one million Dementia Friends across England and Wales, and have set an ambitious target of creating four million Dementia Friends by 2020.

What has HSBC done to help?

Over 12,000 employees have become Dementia Friends, with plans for even more to do so. A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it's like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action.

Their bake sales, treks, runs and bike rides are all part of our plan to raise over £3m over three years with our local communities.

And they're supporting their employees who are living with dementia or supporting a loved one, by making sure they allow them to take time to care for family members and access vital support networks. To find out more about HSBC, click here.
