CVs are absolutely key to landing the job of your dreams, so you need to know how to write one that presents your skills and level of experience in the best possible light.
You need to take your time when it comes to creating a CV as you don’t want it to feel rushed or thrown together, so doing the research you are now is a great first step.
This guide will help you learn how to make the best first impression. Whether you are writing a CV for the very first time, rewriting an old one after having time off from work for a lengthy period, gaining new skills or simply wanting to enter into a new field, this guide can help you. But after you have read this, if you would like to learn more, then Raw Resume is the site for you!
Layout
Believe it or not, how you format and present your CV is one of the most important things about writing your CV. Your CV needs to be easily readable otherwise the company may just stop reading it altogether if they find it too difficult, after all you do only have a matter of seconds to impress them. Your CV needs to catch their eye as they will have lots to get through and they simply don’t have the time for hard to read CVs.
Creating a Heading
Every CV needs a good heading and there are a few things that you need to include. You should always include your full name, address, phone number and email address. Make sure that your email is professional, such as using your name only. Email is one of the most popular forms of communication between employers and job seekers, so it is important to include. You should always use your own home address and just the one phone number that you are reachable on. Furthermore, a polite and clear outgoing message for your voicemail will give a good impression.
Keywords
If you are placing your CV online then writing in keywords is very important as employers will use these when it comes to searching for CVs and people to contact about a potential interview. If your CV does not contain keywords then it will be much harder to find.
Be Honest
You should always be honest throughout your CV and never lie or make any claims that you cannot uphold or that isn’t true. Usually, an employer will sense if something isn’t quite right with a CV and if they don’t and you get offered an interview then the chances are you will be caught out.
Type of CV
When it comes to writing your CV you need to know what type of CV it is that you are wanting to write. There are three types of CVs and those are: chronological, functional and combined. Chronological focuses on the skills section within the CV and is used most commonly within fields such as academia and law. Functional CVs typically highlight your major skills and accomplishments from the very beginning of the CV, so the employer can see what you can do and offer them. A combined CV is, as the name suggests, a combination of the first two. It includes elements from both and will have a short summary of your skills and accomplishments as well as a much longer summary section.
Customise your CV
Once you have written your CV, the work certainly isn’t over. You will need to keep updating it with every job application you make. Do your research and make it so that it targets them and what they are looking for in a candidate.
If you are finding it extra difficult when it comes to writing your new CV, then there are services available, such as UK Top Writers, where you can hire people to write your CV for you. All you need to do is tell them what job it should be targeted at and they should be able to help.
Sell Yourself
After all, a CV is simply an advertisement of yourself and what you can offer their company. So you need to make it unique to you, convey your passion for the work you want to do and your dedication to the field, as well as making it brief. Companies really don’t have a lot of time so you need to be able to get your point across quickly.
