How to get a job that makes a difference

Category: Returnships (Returning to work)

New job

So, they promised us the tuition fees would be worth it. That university was a place to grow and learn. That we would finish with useful skills and knowledge. That one day *gasp* we might be able to get a job we enjoyed.

Half of 18 to 24-year-olds say a good work-life balance is their main career goal. Almost half of people in this age range say they want employers than can offer them a career and help them build a family, but many of those think they can’t have both. It doesn’t have to be that way. Here are our top tips on successfully stepping out of education and into a compassionate world of work:

  1. Get some work experience: Yeah, yeah. We know, unpaid labour, (sometimes) poor conditions and fiercely competitive recruitment for dogsbody roles. It’s not easy getting good skills on your CV. It helps to think creatively, have you taken on a leadership or admin role in a society (or could you start)? Does your university offer bursaries or scholarship funds to help support you on unpaid internships? Does your course have the option of work placements – if not, can it start?
  2. Sign up to a good job site: This one is important. If you want a job with a socially-responsible employer, then VERCIDA is a great place to begin. It’s cleverer than your standard job listing page. In fact, it has built-in clever artificial intelligence tools that match you to jobs you never even thought you could do. It’s inspired, and inspiring and there are hundreds of jobs from employers that care to give a damn about the world we live and work in. Sign up here.
  3. Consider opportunities at every level: If you really want to get a position with great job satisfaction then think about your goals, not about the role. Graduate scheme jobs (say they) require no experience and help you climb the ladder to jobs in an area you enjoy. The corporate world is huge with opportunities in odd and usual corners. Where you end up need not be where you start. We’re just saying, be open-minded.

On the other side, employers also realise that to get the best talent in the emerging workforce they need to be inclusive. That means staff benefits such as flexible working, childcare benefits, staff networks, and mentoring. We work with only themost inclusive employers to help find the right role, for you. Search for available positions now.
