How to become a more inclusive employer

The words Diversity and Inclusion in white on a red VERCIDA branded background

It seems as though the landscape is changing for employers looking to be more inclusive. Today more than ever companies are not only making an effort to be an inclusive workplace, but are striving to be the best in the industry. Here in the UK, the most inclusive companies tend to be in the tech, consumer, and pharmaceutical industries, but that’s not to say that others aren’t looking to get on the list.

If you’re searching for ways that your company could be more inclusive, then you’ll want to take a look at these various tips that you can put into action right away.

Be willing to accept change

The first step in becoming a more inclusive workplace is that you need to be willing to make changes. Don't let fear hold you back, being more inclusive sometimes means making some pretty drastic changes in the workplace. You can do such things as make changes to policies that may be limiting, adjust rules, and create new ones that make it more inclusive for all.

At the same time, it's important to keep re-evaluating your current programs and policies making sure they stay with the times and the needs of people today. Just become a policy works this year, doesn’t mean it will still make sense next year.

Make it very clear that you are inclusive

In order to create an environment that is truly inclusive, you need to make your position clear to your entire staff. Everyone needs to understand what inclusivity means, and how you plan on achieving it. This should also be made apparent to potential employees during the interview process. They need to understand the culture in your company so they can determine if it's a good fit for them.

Take a look at your hiring process

It's also a good idea to take a look at how you go about hiring staff. Are you unwittingly using methods that don't promote inclusivity? Take a look at what is working well and what could be improved upon. How can you ensure that minority groups feel comfortable applying to your company?

Empower those who champion inclusivity

Take a look at the employees that already exist in your company and find those that embody inclusivity and diversity. You can then empower those employees and have them act as leaders within the company in terms of spreading the message. These individuals will act as great examples of the kind of culture you are working to create within your company where diversity is celebrated and valued.

Understand it’s a process

While it’s great to have these goals of making your company more inclusive, it’s important to understand that it will be a process. It’s not going to happen overnight, and that’s perfectly okay. Instead, make a plan, include the goals and steps you want to take, and then you can start working on creating the kind of environment that makes everyone feel proud and valued.
