Winnie King's inspiring 'social mobility story'

House Staff - Winnie King

"I left secondary school with only GCSEs, I didn't finish my A levels and therefore didn’t progress to university. Being a child of a first-generation immigrant played a big role whilst growing up, I was always bullied at school and found it difficult being accepted into groups.

In 2008, I was doing my usual commute to work when I came across an advert in the newspaper for a PA role within the Parliamentary Estates Directorate in the House and, after ticking all the skills that were being asked for, I thought I would apply for it.

I never dreamed of being able to work in an organisation like this - and I was even told by colleagues in my previous job that I shouldn't expect to even get an interview, let alone be offered a job.

When I tell people that I work here, they automatically ask me what degree I have and are always surprised when I tell them that I didn't go to university.

I care about social mobility because I want to encourage those that don’t think they would be capable of working in Parliament that they can.

I want to show people that we are an open organisation that can create a wide range of opportunities without the need to go to university."
