We’re winners…. a spotlight on social mobility at HM Revenue & Customs

HMRC’s continual investment into social mobility has been recognised in the UK Social Mobility Awards winning the Progression Programme of the Year Award. We also achieved 50th position in this year’s Top 75 UK Employers for Social Mobility Index. In addition, we were also highly commended in the Community Programme of the Year Award category for the successful work undertaken with the Pupil Referral Unit pilot in the East Midlands.

Along with staff testimonials and success stories, these achievements showcase HMRC’s talent and development programmes, and our initiatives on offer to help HMRC employees with career progression.

How do we support social mobility?

We are really proud of the work we do to ensure that everyone has a chance to thrive, regardless of their background.  Here are a few examples:

  • We offer five learning and development days as a minimum to help everyone develop the skills they need to progress regardless of their background.
  • We seek to influence HMRC policy that impacts social mobility, to include recruitment, progression and data recording. This is achieved via operating a school and university-blind recruitment process, which removes recruiter bias.
  • We provided 941 Movement to Work placements, an initiative that provides work experience placements for young people aged 18 to 30 who are not currently in employment, education or training.
  • More than 3000 of our colleagues have supported 38,000+ young people take the first step to a more positive working future through our partnership with Prince’s Trust.
  • We also have an active Social Mobility staff network across all of our locations which works to build understanding and share successes through year round activities.

Here’s what one of our Social Mobility Ambassador’s had to say ‘For me, the most attractive aspect of HMRC is their promotion of diversity, inclusion and desire to invest in staff learning and development. Outside of my role, I volunteer as a Social mobility ambassador, promoting career development within the Civil Service. This has been extremely rewarding and allowed me to give back further’ - Mariama, Compliance Officer.
