UK Power Networks: Helping young people climb the career ladder

A power firm has been helping Eltham students prepare for the world of work.
UK Power Networks, which keeps the lights on in London, was among eight companies helping young people get their careers off to a strong start this week at Crown Woods Academy.
A series of workshops was organised to prepare young people for every stage of the job application process, including writing their CV and preparing for interviews. The sessions were run for groups of Year 11 students to help them make a good first impression on future employers.
Emma Barbour, talent acquisition partner at UK Power Networks, led a workshop about group discussions which the students may face when they apply for jobs or university. They discussed whether young people should be required to stay in full-time education until they are 18, unless they gain an apprenticeship or further training. The other debate was on whether apprenticeships are good opportunities for young people - or cheap labour for employers.
Emma said: “It was a great opportunity to engage with young people in an informal environment which allowed them to ask any career-related questions they had.”
UK Power Networks gave out job descriptions about its foundation apprenticeship programme for schools leavers. The company is currently recruiting for these roles – see the website for details.
