“Equality and diversity is in everything we do”, says Hertfordshire County Council

Category: Neurodiversity

“Hertfordshire County Council is proud to be a Disability Confident employer. We’re committed to achieving diversity and equality of opportunity both as a large employer and as a provider of services to the people of Hertfordshire,” states Sally Hopper, Assistant Director of Human Resources for the council.

Employees with disabilities are encouraged to be confident about demonstrating their skills and abilities at the council. The local authority employs 8,000 staff, and their working practices make them a government-recognised ‘Disability Confident’ employer.

Commitment to equality

Hertfordshire County Council strive to incorporate equality and diversity into everything they do, so it is an integral part of their business, and not just an ‘add on’.

“Our Equalities Policy demonstrates our wholehearted commitment to continued action in tackling inequality, promoting diversity and inclusion,” Sally explains. “We help managers see the possibilities in recruiting people with disabilities and the varied skills and experiences they can bring to the role. We’re always looking to improve our process to attract diverse candidates and to provide training to managers to help them reduce or remove bias from their ways of working.”

What does being Disability Confident mean?

We are currently a Disability Confident Employer (Level 2) . From a recruitment perspective it means the council has committed to offering a guaranteed interview to applicants with a disability if they meet the core job criteria; and providing reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process. This ensures that all applicants have an equal opportunity to get to interview stage and show what they can do.

Celebrating Diversity

Hertfordshire County Council recognises that a diverse workforce brings varied skills and experience and helps promote the council as an employer of choice.

We encourage employees to speak openly about their disabilities and help raise awareness by sharing their experiences with work colleagues through various awareness days. We also support employees to work flexibly which ensures they can achieve a work life balance.

Richard Hall – Head of Resourcing and Relations at Hertfordshire County Council explains, “The impact of this commitment is the removal of barriers for jobseekers. It supports people to get to interview stage and show what they can do. It’s also about doing more than just saying we’re committed to the Disability Confident scheme, it’s about actually doing it.”
