Have You Considered A Career In Cleaning?

Have You Considered A Career In Cleaning?

Have you considered a career in cleaning?

Are you rarely seen without your rubber gloves on; a cloth in one hand and bleach in the other? If so, have you considered a career in cleaning? As well as doing something you love, it's a career that fits around you and you could even set up your own business!

Cleaning isn’t for everyone. Many of us struggle to clean our own homes, so the thought of cleaning other people’s day in, day out, fills us with dread. But, if nothing makes you feel happier than when you are dusting nooks and crannies and you have the biggest smile on your face when you have made the space sparkle, then you should read on and find out more!

Where will I work?

As a cleaner you could work on a number of jobs from general cleaning in offices, shops, schools or homes or you could do more specialised work such as industrial cleaning or cleaning hospital wards. You could be cleaning the same places every day or you could find that your days are more varied depending on what type of cleaning you are interested in doing and who you work for.

Who will I work for?

You have several options once you have made the decision to embark on a cleaning career – you could become self-employed and work for yourself or you could work either part time or full time on behalf of a company. Check out these Molly Maid Cleaning Jobs to give you an idea of the roles you could fulfil for a domestic cleaning company.

What will my working hours be?

This depends on where you are cleaning – with someone’s home, for example, you could probably do during the day while they are out at work, whereas an office would need cleaning outside office hours. This could mean early mornings, or at weekends. If you work full-time this could be 35 to 40 hours a week.

How much will I earn?

Full-time cleaners can start on around £12,000 a year, but earnings are much higher for supervisors and specialist cleaners. Part-time cleaners are usually paid by the hour.

What skills does the role require?

There are many skills involved - alongside the ability to clean, this role requires a high level of fitness, good people skills, trustworthiness and competency – to a name a few.

Do I need any qualifications?

No. You do not need any formal qualifications to be a cleaner, but you will need to show that you are reliable and able to do the job. Previous experience is helpful – especially if you are looking to do specialised cleaning.

Will I receive training?

You will usually receive training on the job. Depending on your role you may get the opportunity to complete qualifications, such as:

Level 1: Award in Practical Cleaning Skills

Level 2: Certificate in Cleaning and Support Service Skills

Level 3: Diploma in Cleaning Supervision Skills

You may also be encouraged to take training through the British Institute of Cleaning Science or, if you want to move on to a more senior role, you may want to consider working towards a University Certificate in Cleaning Management.

If you hadn’t been considering a career in cleaning, you might be now!
