GWR Celebrate National Women in Engineering Day

Hear from two of our female colleagues on National Women in Engineering Day.

Trudy is our latest female recruit into our Cocklebury Sidings, Swindon Depot.Trudy, white female

“I have been working on the railway for seven years, I wanted to try something different and progress within the company. I never thought of engineering an option for me as I thought I wouldn’t fit in and it was a ‘man’s world.’ A job opportunity came up working at our Cocklebury Sidings, Swindon depot. I was interested and thought I would apply.

I went into the interview thinking I didn’t have a chance however the interview team did a great job at putting me at ease, the interviewers were warm and the process was not as scary as I thought it was going to be. The interviewers explained that the role was not gender specific and provided me with all the details I needed about the vacancy.

I was so pleased to be offered my new role in Engineering.  I’m really looking forward to joining the team and learning new skills that will help me progress in my career at GWR.”

Jespah is a shunter at our Longrock depot in Penzance.

Jespah, white female

“I was working customer service when I saw the job advert for a shunter at Penzance depot. A career in engineering interested me as I wanted more of a hands-on role.

I was offered the shunter role and I have been working at the depot for the last few months. I’m really enjoying it, I have a great mentor who answers all the questions I have or if he doesn’t know then he finds out and lets me know. It’s great to work outside and I get a realsense of achievement from actually seeing what I have done at the end of the day.

I am the only female shunter at the depot, this isn’t a negative aspect of my role in fact I enjoy it. There is always a lot of banter and I get a real sense of achievement completing tasks that perhaps my male colleagues thought I may have had difficulty completing.

I see my future career in engineering. I would encourage other females who are considering a career engineering to do it as it is a great environment to work in”
