Gender Pay Gap Report 2018 - Spektrix

Category: Gender Pay Gap, gender, Gender Focus, Gender Equality, Spektrix, Report

Red background with white text overlaid, spelling Gender Focus.

At Spektrix we believe that opportunities for people to experience entertainment events are fundamental to a high quality of life and the health of our communities. Our mission is to enable the organisations that present these events to engage and deepen relationships with the broadest range of audiences. If we want our clients to reach diverse audiences, our team needs to reflect this diversity as well and we need to continue to build an inclusive work environment.

The gender pay gap is the difference between the average earnings of people who identify as men and women, throughout an organisation and across all roles. For clarity, it is not about whether people in the same job get paid the same if they have similar experience and are performing at the same level given - that is known as equal pay and has been enshrined in UK law since 1975.

Companies with over 250 staff are legally required to publish a snapshot of their gender pay gap on the 5th of April each year. With 125 team members globally, and less than 100 in the UK we aren’t required to submit our data but we want to be transparent and publicly accountable for the way we treat our team members and we believe this kind of reporting is an important step in prompting a conversation about what changes we can all make to the way we work to reduce inequality across our societies.

These numbers are a snapshot of Spektrix’s UK team members’ pay on 5th April 2018. We have calculated the pay gap globally (see appendix), but for reporting requirements we have focused on the UK only. You can see the average hourly rates that we paid people who identify as men and women on those dates, and the percentage difference between them. You can also see the percentage of men and women in each pay quartile.

Eight out of ten UK companies have a gender pay gap with the UK average pay gap being 18%. In the tech sector this is 25% and in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector it is 19.6%

In April 2018, Spektrix’s mean pay gap was 5.17% and our median pay gap was 0%.

We’re confident we pay equally for equal work. But our figures show that we still have work to do to improve the number of women in higher-paid positions. We have a leadership team which comprises a majority of people who identify as female (57%) but our engineering team in particular has a majority of team members who identify as male and these are some of the highest paid roles in the business. This data is from April 2018 and our engineering team has changed and grown substantially since then  which means our gender pay gap is likely to increase in the near term but we continue to work on attracting and developing engineers and senior leaders who identify as female.

What are we doing about it?

In 2018 we joined the Employers’ Network for Equality & Inclusion (ENEI) to help us build our diversity & inclusion strategy. We undertook a demographic survey at the end of 2018 to understand the diversity we already had in the business, and we launched our D&I strategy in early 2019. Some of the initiatives we have undertaken include:

  • Ensuring there’s someone who identifies as female on every interview panel
  • Removing gender-biased terminology from job descriptions
  • Offering part time roles and job shares where possible
  • Offering unconscious bias training for recruiters and managers
  • Launching engineering apprenticeships for the first time

There’s still more work to be done and we know that in a small business like Spektrix it will take time to see a difference in the numbers. But we’re committed to increasing the number of people who identify as female in the business overall, and particularly in our engineering and senior management positions.

Appendix - Entire business figures

We calculated the gender pay gap for the entire business, converting North American salaries into GBP at a standard exchange rate of 1.28 USD:GBP. Our mean pay gap increases 2% to 7% overall when you include the North American team, and our median hourly rate pay gap increases to 5%.
